Tadashi and his younger brother Hiro were orphaned by a terrible accident when Tadashi was only nine years old. From that point onward, they went to live with their mother's sister* – their Aunt Cass – above her Lucky Cat Café. Growing up without their parents was tough, and Tadashi naturally floated into the position of caretaker for his baby brother when he noticed how much his aunt struggled with knowing what to do (the extent of her child raising knowledge came from a few nights here and there babysitting).

Tadashi was always very intelligent. He skipped grades, read medical journals for fun, and was always placed in more difficult courses where he could be more challenged. While he was still young, it came out that his baby brother was a genius. Those were hectic times as his Aunt Cass dealt with reporters and Tadashi came to grips with his newfound jealousy for Hiro. Eventually, all of that was pushed past. Tadashi accepted Hiro’s brilliance and took to challenging him and caring for him as always. It was a good thing that Tadashi was the sort of child who could get past his kid brother being naturally smarter than he was. Hiro was bullied a lot at school and eventually began to withdraw from everything. It took Tadashi coaxing him back out of his shell with inventions and projects before Hiro could turn back into the bright and happy boy he had once been. Time passed. Tadashi and Hiro took to inventing things together in their free time and continued to be extremely close.

Ten years passed since the tragic day Tadashi moved in with his aunt. Tadashi managed to be accepted into the prestigious SFIT where he studied robotics under the world-renowned Professor Robert Callaghan. Through his studies and general interest, Tadashi discovered the shocking number of people who were harmed or died because of a lack of personal healthcare options. He began working on an invention that would have the capability of scanning its personal patient whenever they experienced distress, determining the cause and providing immediate treatment when necessary or calling for help. With the direction of his head professor, Tadashi solidified that idea, creating at last a personal health care companion which he named Baymax. He designed Baymax too look something like a giant, walking marshmallow. Tadashi wanted his invention to look friendly and inviting. He calculated that by doing so, even those who were distrusting or afraid of hospitals would be able to benefit from Baymax's help.

While Tadashi’s college life was just starting to show a lot of promise, his home life became more complicated. Tadashi's younger brother was fast becoming a fourteen-year-old terror as he graduated high school and put his considerable genius into hustling questionable characters in San Fransokyo's dark, back alleys. Tadashi was forced to go to extremes to curb Hiro's antics, eventually sewing a tracking device into the seams of Hiro’s favorite hoody when he suspected his brother’s knack for reckless behavior was starting to border on obscenely dangerous. He joked with his friend Fred at school that he was starting to feel like spiderman – he’d developed Hiro’s-being-insane senses that were unfortunately correct more often than they were false alarms.

During one such uneasy feeling, Tadashi tracked down his baby brother in the seedy underbelly of San Fransokyo’s illegal botfighting rings. He managed to rescue Hiro from any bodily harm, but before he could get him to safety, the police arrived. It was the most infuriating and embarrassing night of Tadashi’s life as he was hauled down to the police station and forced to wait behind bars until his Aunt Cass could rush down to bail both him and the incorrigible Hiro out of jail.

He knew then that his baby brother was going nowhere fast and wasting his potential. Tadashi wanted better things for Hiro, but telling his brother what to do had never worked in the past. Thinking fast, he decided to trick Hiro into going to his lab at school, introducing him to all of his classmates and their projects before showing off his own. Baymax suitably impressed Hiro, but the stroke of luck that Tadashi couldn’t have planned better if he tried was Professor Callaghan stopping by his lab and instructing Hiro that if he didn’t like to be challenged and enjoyed the easy life, SFIT wasn’t for him.

It worked like a charm. Hiro decided he had to go to SFIT and Tadashi spent the period of time until the school’s next big acceptance showcase steering his brother through blocks and helping him prepare a project that would land him a spot in the school alongside Tadashi. Everything seemed to be going great. The day of the showcase arrived, and with Tadashi’s sideline coaching, Hiro earned his acceptance and the attention of Krei – the owner and CEO of the world’s largest technology company. Always the protective one, Tadashi kept an eye on the proceedings and couldn’t have been more proud when Hiro decided to turn down the offer for his invention and instead continue developing it as a student of SFIT. His pride didn’t blind him to Krei attempting to pocket his brother’s invention, though, and he was quick to make certain Krei returned it.

After that, it was time for Tadashi to tease Hiro a little and to finally feel like everything was starting to come together in their lives.

But then the fire started.

Professor Callaghan, his mentor, was still inside the exhibition hall – trapped. Tadashi acted, driven by instincts and the urge to help even when Hiro tried to stop him. He raced back into the burning building, unable to live with himself if he allowed his professor to die without first trying to save him

In Snowblind (several years ago when
I played...) Tadashi was quick to befriend Al, Zack, and others. He wanted to help everyone get to the bottom of what was happening to them, but day to day survival stood in his way more often than not. Still, he did what he could. When his brother appeared on the network, he forged a path that took a lot out of him to reach the younger Hamada, then took Hiro back to the group for safety. Later, it was only a matter of being just a moment too slow that left Tadashi locked out in the cold. He put on a brave face to tell his family and friends goodbye for what felt like the last time... until today.
