Name: Tadashi Hamada
Canon: Big Hero 6
Original or Alternate Universe: Original
Canon Point: Just before canon demise.
Number: 144
Setting:
Big Hero 6 takes place in the only-slightly futuristic city of San Fransokyo. As the name suggests, it is a conglomeration of aspects from both San Francisco and Tokyo. This isn’t a world of science fiction – there’s no formula for transforming people into monsters, no shrink rays, and definitely no invisible sandwich machines. There does exist, however: electro magnetic suspension technology (allowing for faster modes of transportation slightly more advanced than our modern day version), laser induced plasma (with endless applications from medicine to mining), breakthroughs in chemical metal embrittlement, and advanced learning AI programs that can download data to become better healthcare assistants.
The city is powered through wind turbine blimps in the shape of fish. Like most of the tech in Big Hero 6, this exists in our world, too. It just isn’t as readily accessible or being applied as well as it is in San Fransokyo.
Tadashi studies robotics in the city at the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology. He’s been working on a project at SFIT that he hopes will save many lives.

Tadashi and his younger brother Hiro were orphaned by a terrible accident when Tadashi was only nine years old. From that point onward, they went to live with their mother's sister* – their Aunt Cass – above her Lucky Cat Café. Growing up without their parents was tough, and Tadashi naturally floated into the position of caretaker for his baby brother when he noticed how much his aunt struggled with knowing what to do (the extent of her child raising knowledge came from a few nights here and there babysitting).
Tadashi was always very intelligent. He skipped grades, read medical journals for fun, and was always placed in more difficult courses where he could be more challenged. While he was still young, it came out that his baby brother was a genius. Those were hectic times as his Aunt Cass dealt with reporters and Tadashi came to grips with his newfound jealousy for Hiro. Eventually, all of that was pushed past. Tadashi accepted Hiro’s brilliance and took to challenging him and caring for him as always. It was a good thing that Tadashi was the sort of child who could get past his kid brother being naturally smarter than he was. Hiro was bullied a lot at school and eventually began to withdraw from everything. It took Tadashi coaxing him back out of his shell with inventions and projects before Hiro could turn back into the bright and happy boy he had once been. Time passed. Tadashi and Hiro took to inventing things together in their free time and continued to be extremely close.
Ten years passed since the tragic day Tadashi moved in with his aunt. Tadashi managed to be accepted into the prestigious SFIT where he studied robotics under the world-renowned Professor Robert Callaghan. Through his studies and general interest, Tadashi discovered the shocking number of people who were harmed or died because of a lack of personal healthcare options. He began working on an invention that would have the capability of scanning its personal patient whenever they experienced distress, determining the cause and providing immediate treatment when necessary or calling for help. With the direction of his head professor, Tadashi solidified that idea, creating at last a personal health care companion which he named Baymax. He designed Baymax too look something like a giant, walking marshmallow. Tadashi wanted his invention to look friendly and inviting. He calculated that by doing so, even those who were distrusting or afraid of hospitals would be able to benefit from Baymax's help.
While Tadashi’s college life was just starting to show a lot of promise, his home life became more complicated. Tadashi's younger brother was fast becoming a fourteen-year-old terror as he graduated high school and put his considerable genius into hustling questionable characters in San Fransokyo's dark, back alleys. Tadashi was forced to go to extremes to curb Hiro's antics, eventually sewing a tracking device into the seams of Hiro’s favorite hoody when he suspected his brother’s knack for reckless behavior was starting to border on obscenely dangerous. He joked with his friend Fred at school that he was starting to feel like spiderman – he’d developed Hiro’s-being-insane senses that were unfortunately correct more often than they were false alarms.
During one such uneasy feeling, Tadashi tracked down his baby brother in the seedy underbelly of San Fransokyo’s illegal botfighting rings. He managed to rescue Hiro from any bodily harm, but before he could get him to safety, the police arrived. It was the most infuriating and embarrassing night of Tadashi’s life as he was hauled down to the police station and forced to wait behind bars until his Aunt Cass could rush down to bail both him and the incorrigible Hiro out of jail.
He knew then that his baby brother was going nowhere fast and wasting his potential. Tadashi wanted better things for Hiro, but telling his brother what to do had never worked in the past. Thinking fast, he decided to trick Hiro into going to his lab at school, introducing him to all of his classmates and their projects before showing off his own. Baymax suitably impressed Hiro, but the stroke of luck that Tadashi couldn’t have planned better if he tried was Professor Callaghan stopping by his lab and instructing Hiro that if he didn’t like to be challenged and enjoyed the easy life, SFIT wasn’t for him.
It worked like a charm. Hiro decided he had to go to SFIT and Tadashi spent the period of time until the school’s next big acceptance showcase steering his brother through blocks and helping him prepare a project that would land him a spot in the school alongside Tadashi. Everything seemed to be going great. The day of the showcase arrived, and with Tadashi’s sideline coaching, Hiro earned his acceptance and the attention of Krei – the owner and CEO of the world’s largest technology company. Always the protective one, Tadashi kept an eye on the proceedings and couldn’t have been more proud when Hiro decided to turn down the offer for his invention and instead continue developing it as a student of SFIT. His pride didn’t blind him to Krei attempting to pocket his brother’s invention, though, and he was quick to make certain Krei returned it.
After that, it was time for Tadashi to tease Hiro a little and to finally feel like everything was starting to come together in their lives.
But then the fire started.
Professor Callaghan, his mentor, was still inside the exhibition hall – trapped. Tadashi acted, driven by instincts and the urge to help even when Hiro tried to stop him. He raced back into the burning building, unable to live with himself if he allowed his professor to die without first trying to save him.
Personality:
Patient, kind, selfless, responsible, optimistic, devoted.... Tadashi is all of this and more.
Patience is one of Tadashi’s leading characteristics, followed closely by a kind and caring heart. He had to grow up quickly to fill the hole left by his parents, but Tadashi’s natural affinity for seeing the good in people allowed him to lovingly guide his baby brother through the jagged obstacle course of problems left in the wake of the accident. His Aunt Cass has long admitted that she doesn't know much about children, so it always fell to Tadashi to notice if Hiro was bullied at school and to step in to make sure his brother would be okay. Because he grew up quickly, he has a calm and serious side that seems beyond his years. He’s tapped into that aspect of his personality along with his intelligence to go far as a student as SFIT, working tirelessly to create a robot that could save lives.
More importantly than simply being patient and kind, Tadashi is a seriously selfless person. An extreme example is how he ran into a burning building, regardless of his own safety, to try to save his professor. He's more than just extreme heroics, though. Tadashi's dreams revolve around helping other people despite any detriments to himself. He really is happy as long as other people are happy. Right after the accident that killed his parents, Tadashi began inventing goofy little toys to cheer up his aunt when he saw the pain she was in. Tadashi has always been that kind of boy -- even when dealing with his own grief, his priority was to alleviate the pain of others. Almost everything he does, he does for other people. When Hiro began to be bullied at school, Tadashi built a bucket of rust and bolts that could only loosely be identified as a "ship", tacked on some thrusters, and dragged his baby brother along for the test drive. It took a serious investment of time and a risk of getting into trouble to do that, but it had the intended effect of cheering up Hiro and getting Hiro interested in inventing, which was all Tadashi could hope for.
On top of his selflessness, Tadashi is a driven man. He has goals and he works tirelessly to achieve them. He isn’t one to give up at the first sign of trouble, and always tries to find just the right angle to see through his problems. Despite dozens upon dozens of failures with his robotics project, Tadashi always continued. Exhausted, but never defeated. He nurtures the same attitude in others, always encouraging his fellow classmates (and especially Hiro) to reach their full potential. Seeing his brother waste his talents on illegal botfighting, Tadashi drove Hiro to his school to see how much more he could do with his intellect if challenged. Tadashi relies more on gently nudging people in the right direction rather than attempting to redirect them with brute force. Tadashi is basically everyone's perfect big brother. He's willing to do anything and everything to help other people, displaying a level of selflessness that few can match.
Tadashi is also, let’s face it, a bit of a nerd. He reads medical journals for fun, enjoys geeking out over new breakthroughs in science that he hears about, and sometimes has trouble keeping a lid on his emotions and maintaining his cool big brother status when he gets too excited about something. Nerding out aside, though, his life does not revolve around a computer screen. Tadashi is all about practical applications and pushing boundaries. Though he's graduated to less dangerous experiments compared to when he built the "ship" for Hiro's sake, he's still all about actually doing something. He doesn't want to just study ways to help people, he wants to actually be the one creating the helpful inventions or the one going out and offering assistance. Someone has to help, and he believes that he is that someone. Tadashi is not a man to do anything halfheartedly.
On another note, his baby brother didn’t receive all of the family sass, either. Tadashi exudes dry humor when the need arises. He enjoys a good joke and actually likes listening to crazy stories. Since Hiro is the more excitable of the two of them, Tadashi often relies on his dry observations to shock his baby brother out of his melodramatic declarations long enough to have an actual conversation. A notable example was when Hiro gloomily claimed that he had no ideas and Tadashi responded with a dry, "Wow, washed up at fourteen. So sad," before trying to help Hiro through his block. After his brother's presentation, Tadashi broke the serious atmosphere for a moment to tease Hiro about how, instead of saying how proud of himself he should be, he only asked for a moment to talk to tell Hiro his fly had been down for the entire show. He usually uses his humor to make a point or to put others at ease.
Overall, Tadashi is basically just a good guy. He has his flaws, of course. His patience can break and he can be harsher than he means to be. After saving Hiro from his botfighting fiasco, he was angry enough to let out his frustrations on the younger boy. That sort of thing is a rare occurrence, though -- most of the people he cares about don't make it a habit to put their lives in needless danger. The easiest of Tadashi's buttons to push revolve around needless recklessness or not treating other people with respect. He works so hard to help other people, that the idea of someone intentionally harming someone else or not caring enough to help a fellow human being can set off a fuse in him that normally does not exist. Despite his flaws, Tadashi always strives to be better than he was before and to help those around him improve, too. He has an eye to the future and he’s excited about what possibilities it will hold. Tadashi will never stop being optimistic and seeing the best in humanity.
Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:
Tadashi is, unfortunately, only human. He’s in relatively good shape, but he’s no extreme athlete. He can fall victim to anything a normal human can.
While he is only human, Tadashi is a very smart human. He’s a brilliant student of robotics and can learn almost anything that he puts his mind to if given enough time and perhaps a proper teacher. He has a wide knowledge of robotics and medicine after the time he's invested while creating Baymax.
Additionally, Tadashi knows how to handle a moped. For all of his seriousness, he still has an adventurous streak and can handle speeds and turns and jumps in a way that might even make his friend Gogo give him a thumbs up.
He’s no master, but Tadashi does know the basics of karate, which he studied for a while as a means of physical fitness and attempted to teach to Hiro when the younger boy began to be bullied at school.
Inventory: His wallet with a few bucks, his student ID, and three small photographs – one is a family photo with his mother, father, Hiro, and himself. Another is a much more recent family photo with just the two brothers and their Aunt Cass. The third is a goofy “selfie” group shot with his nerd squad courtesy of Honey Lemon. He also has his San Fransokyo Ninjas baseball cap and Baymax’s medical and personality chip along with his moped helmet.
Appearance:
Tadashi Hamada has a tall, reasonably athletic build. He is of mixed Japanese and Caucasian decent and has very expressive eyes. It’s often there that his emotions can be read, even if he’s keeping a straight face to hide them. Tadashi keeps his black hair cut neatly above his ears and often cannot be seen without a San Fransokyo Ninja’s baseball cap perched on his head. He usually wears blazers and/or cardigans over t-shirts. He wears jeans in muted colors with his favorite mint-colored sneakers.

Tadashi wasn’t sure why he started carrying Baymax’s chip around with him everywhere once the initial disorientation had left him. He could have left it back where he slept, but… something about the suddenness of his arrival in this place left a niggling fear in the back of his head that he could be taken away from here just as quickly as he had come. There was a lot about this place that sparked uncertainties that Tadashi usually didn't entertain. The size of the ship made most hallways quiet, barren, and somewhat uninviting. He got a cold chill when he wandered them during the evening, adding to his concerns that he should keep anything valuable close to him at all times. It was hard to know what to expect in this place.
He brushed that thought away for now. Frowning slightly, he folded his arms over his chest and regarded the hallways in front of him. He… was fairly certain he knew where he was going.
Mostly certain.
“Right or left… which was it?” he muttered, absently pointing to each direction in turn with Baymax’s chip before slipping it back into his pocket and setting off in his chosen direction.
It wasn’t like there was an immediate rush to get anywhere. Tadashi actually wasn’t too concerned if he got lost. This was a trip more for his curiosity’s sake than anything else. Later on, he would be working to rebuild Baymax and the medical bay might be essential, but for now…
It took him maybe thirty more minutes to find the right set of doors and get to where he needed to be. He was lucky to recognize the place – and he did only barely -- but the flicker of memory along with the instructions he’d received earlier guided Tadashi at last into the med bay. Once there, he had to stop and take it in.
He had already been warned that he didn’t have the clearance to access everything there, but just seeing the facilities when not in a disoriented stupor was enough to suitably impress him. Automatically, he withdrew Baymax’s chip from his pocket again, turning it over in his hands as he toured the sterile facilities.
“I really wish I had you operational.” He smiled fondly down at the chip before glancing up again. “I can’t even imagine how well you could help people with access to this…”
That was assuming he would be allowed to program Baymax with any of the advanced medical knowledge available. Or that they would ever get a chance to go home, but no… He had Aunt Cass to think about along with all of his friends. Tadashi was certain that he would be home before his aunt even had a chance to start missing him.
He took some time to be a little nosier, checking out what was available to him and making a list in his head of everything on hand. Once he finished, Tadashi couldn’t help the smile that stole across his face. This was it. If he was going to be stuck here for a while, this was probably where he would be the most helpful. Most of this technology was probably far out of his league, but… this was the sort of stuff he’d always dreamed of for the future.
He could help people here now, and when he got home, he could help a lot more.

[There’s a little shuffling and confusion as the camera is adjusted to just the right angle. A frowning face takes the place of the blurred hand that blocked the lens a moment ago and Tadashi fiddles with the feed a moment more before stepping back.
He hesitates, then pulls a baseball cap onto his head after running his hand back through his hair.
There. Everything is settled. Tadashi tugs a lopsided smile into place and brightens up considerably from the thoughtful expression he wore a moment ago.]
This is Tadashi Hamada speaking.
[Another hesitation, but he seems amused by some thought that just flitted through his mind.]
And this is… my first week on board this ship. I haven’t met many of you in person yet, so it might be a little early for this, but… I have a request.
[He at least has the decency to look a little sheepish with one hand rubbing the side of his neck reflexively as he gathers his thoughts. After a moment, he holds up a chip bearing his name and a cartoonish smiling doctor on it.]
I have a robotics project that I feel might be helpful here. Or… Well… here might be helpful to my robotics project. Either way, I need to find a way to get his body rebuilt and restore him to full operation.
I don’t want to take anything that I shouldn’t, so I would appreciate it if someone could give me something of a guide. Tell me what’s okay to use, what’s not okay… that sort of thing.
[Another half smile. He’s still unsure about this entire fiasco, but there’s some optimism behind that hesitation.]
I guess that’s everything. Tadashi sign—
Oh!
Can someone tell me if we have anyone here with medical training?
That should be everything.
[Tadashi offers something of a half wave, reaches forward, then disconnects the feed.]
